The improvement of diabetes management

Improving diabetes management is an important function for public health workers. Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by a disorder in the quantity and concentration of sugar in the blood, which exceeds normal levels (70–110 mg/dL). It occurs due to a partial, absolute, or total deficiency of insulin. Diabetes is divided into two main types: Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. In Type 2, the pancreas still functions but not effectively, meaning it cannot convert glucose efficiently, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. We at the British Academy for Training and Development are pleased to offer a course on improving diabetes management as part of a series of health safety courses for all public health workers.

Overview

Course Objectives

How can diabetes management be improved?

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is managed by changing the lifestyle, including a healthy diet, practicing sport regularly and monitoring blood sugar levels, so eating healthy food reduces body weight, in addition to reducing glucose levels in the blood and practicing sport helps insulin to work more effectively, on the other hand, lowers of blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease.

In order to improve the management of diabetes, the patient should have periodic blood glucose monitoring tests, to see if the treatment is useful in lowering blood sugar levels and whether there is a need to adjust the treatment, some of the periodic tests: (Blood analysis or urine test). If the results of the analysis are positive for the presence of sugar, these indicate that the concentration of sugar in the blood is higher than 180 MG / DL, the third test is hemoglobin, is a procedure that takes place every three months from the date of onset of the disease, the aim of this procedure is to determine the extent of treatment adjustment for glucose (Hemoglobin is 7% or less, indicates how successful diabetes management is).

Course Outline

What is the objective of improving diabetes management?

The objective of improving diabetes management is to maintain blood sugar levels closer to the normal range of 4-6 MM/ L, (Fasting sugar) this will prevent complications, both in the short and the long term, Which include diabetic foot, retinopathy, kidney failure plus peripheral neuropathy, Your health care team, including your specialist doctor and dietitians, can help you to monitor your blood sugar level, However, eating healthy and exercising at times are not enough to keep your blood sugar levels continuously, Type 2 diabetes mellitus becomes over time the pancreas less effective in converting glucose to energy, in the end it may be necessary to start using insulin to control blood sugar levels.
