The British Academy for Training and Development presents this training course in wind and marine energy provided by a team of internationally experienced energy engineers.  The aim of the Renewable Energies Crash Course was to awareness and knowledge of this sector and ultimately to ensure that the skills requirements for this growing sector are met. This course presented marine energy fundamentals, available opportunities and skill sets required within the wave and tidal sector. It covered the key requirements of building a commercial marine energy project, including technologies, business development, the policy framework and environmental consenting. It also examined the developing technologies that will impact the skills requirements in this sector such as smart grid and smart sensors, big data and energy storage.

  • Introduction to Renewable. Fundamentals and key characteristics of wind, solar PV, hydro, wave and tidal energy sources.
  • Wind turbine technology, modelling, control and operations. Principle of operation, turbine types, power train (e.g. gearbox, generator, converter).
  • Wind farm design, control and operation. Design objectives and specifications, electrical collector (array) types, wake and electrical losses, basics of wind farm control.
  • Grid integration. Controls to support power grid operation.
  • Solar PV fundamentals and grid integration. Module design, maximum PowerPoint tracking, power electronic interface.
